From trash to treasure: Make over £1000 selling these household items

From trash to treasure: Make over £1000 selling these household items

Decluttering and clearing out has been the top of the to-do list in most households during lockdown. Before you get rid of all your unwanted clutter, check to see if you have any of eBay's best sellers!

1) 1.1980 Apple Macintosh Computer

With Apple being ever popular, there is an even bigger market for vintage Apple technology. A rare apple III computer or parts from the 80's could make you £330 on eBay!

Here is what we found from a quick search...

2) The 1st Generation iPhone - No box needed!

Another one from Apple. If you still have you old original iPhone lying around you could earn between £50 - £150 and sell it on.

Technology has advanced leaps and bounds since that first iPhone, but there are still people interested in getting their hands on the device that started it all!

Apple produced 6.1 million of the first iPhone before stopping production in July 2008, so they weren’t exactly rare. But there are far fewer of them out there than later models, which could make them more valuable to collectors. As with any collectible, the better the condition, the more you’ll get, with new-in-box items fetching the highest price.

3) Nintendo Wii (with controllers and games)

Video games have come along way since the Nintendo Wii was introduced. However, if you still have the original little white box and controllers lying around, you could earn up to £97.

4) Vinyl Records

Depending on the condition and the artist, your old vinyl records could be worth some serious cash. Not only are they back in style with young folks today, but they are also a collector’s item.

The antiques market seems often heavily influenced by nostalgia and therefore whomever has the buying power at any given time directs the value of collectible items.

For example, an un-released cover of David Bowie’s 1974 Diamond Dogs album sold for $3,550 in 2003. A Nirvana Bleach re-release also sold for $1,500 while a self-titled Beatles album went for $13,750.

5) Turntables

So if you have vinyls then we would assume you would have a turntable to play it on. Lovers of vinyl need something to spin their tunes on so they could be anxious to get your old turntable.

If you have an old unused turntable lying around your home, it could earn you £219. That works out three times the price of buying a new record player.

6) Vintage Sewing Machines

If you’ve inherited a vintage sewing machine it is unlikely you’re going to be getting any use out of it, except as a statement home accessory. However, selling it on eBay could earn up to £137.

7) Board Games

Vintage board games don't sell for as much as other household items, but they still may be worth their original price or better. Monopoly and Mahjong are two of the most sought-after board game sets. For example, several 1991 collector's edition Monopoly sets were selling for on eBay — one for $800.

8. Original Pepsi/Coke crates

These wooden crates have become a favourite for households looking to add a retro touch to their interiors. And can sell for up to £70 on eBay.

9) Harry Potter First Edition 1st Print

You probably won’t get rich selling old books online. But clearing out your shelves can be a way to stretch your budget until next payday. Dozens of sites, including Amazon, will pay for your unwanted paperbacks and college textbooks. Many sites offer fast payment options either via gift cards or PayPal. For such a popular book, coming across the Harry Potter first edition is rarer than you might think. If you have one you can bear to part with, it could earn you £65.

10) Disney VHS Tapes

Your media library might be mostly digital these days, but Disney fanatics are still eager to get their hands on old VHS copies of classic animated films. If you still have those tapes in their clunky plastic clamshell boxes, you might be able to turn a small profit on them.

Although reports that you can make thousands of dollars selling old copies of Beauty and The Beast are an urban legend, you might be able to sell your old tapes for anywhere from $5 to $25 on eBay (more if they’re sealed). This vintage version of Mary Poppins on VHS sold for $61 back in December 2016.

Disney movies aren’t the only VHS tapes that can fetch a good price online. Obscure horror movies, many of which aren’t available on DVD, can sell for $100 or more on eBay!

There are plenty of local groups such as Aberystwyth Swap Shop that may be worth joining. These groups can help you sell your unwanted things locally.

Take a look online to see what else some of your household items may be worth. Even a quick search on eBay or Amazon may give you the answers you need.

Take care and happy selling!
