COVID-19 and Applying for Student Accommodation

COVID-19 and Applying for Student Accommodation

The clock is ticking on a decision about housing for the next academic term. We do not know exactly when this thing will unwind, nor how exactly we will phase back into normality, but it's important to get your accommodation for when it does.

The current situation has resulted in major changes in the University and student accommodation sector, and challenges for students across the UK, as they consider their next steps regarding accommodation for this year, and next.

If you are concerned about your accommodation, or find yourself in a situation where you need to leave your accommodation, change your arrival date or new accommodation contract, there are a number of things you can do. The first is to remain calm, the Government has put a number of measures in place to support people living in rental accommodation.

Can I still apply for Student Accommodation?

Yes. Students who have selected their offer from Aberystwyth University as either their Firm or Insurance choice, and any postgraduate applicants who have received a conditional offer for study at Aberystwyth University can apply for accommodation. Here are our properties to rent: Student Properties.

Will the academic year at Aberystwyth University start in September 2020 as planned?

Aberystwyth University is still currently preparing for the planned intake in September 2020. However, we must continue to follow the advice of the UK Government and/or Public Health Wales and there is a possibility that the scheduled September start date may need to be reviewed. This decision may be taken out of the University’s control. Should there be a need to make changes, all applicants holding offers will be contacted immediately.

Are there opportunities for me to view properties before the start of term?

The series of video viewings we have pre-recorded on our website, you can also email lettings@alexanders-online.co.uk to request a specific property. Emailing or messaging via Facebook provides you with the opportunity to ask us about student life in Aberystwyth, and if you have any questions or need reassurance. No physical viewings will be taking place while still under lockdown. If you are interested in a physical viewing before signing, we can put you on a list and contact you when lockdown is lifted. We are following the guidelines from the government closely and are being updated daily.

I’ve applied for study at Aberystwyth University. Will my application be processed?

Yes. Staff in the Admissions Office are currently working from home and will ensure that your application is processed in the usual way.

If you have any questions about the progress of your application, please contact them here:

I am worried I will miss out if I don't apply for accommodation now

Continue to look on zoopla and on the market for student housing, continue to apply and put your name down on lists to view them when lockdown is over. Don't worry too much as every student is feeling the same pressure as you right now.

How can I view properties during COVID-19 Lockdown?

With most people being responsible and practising social distancing, we have seen a surge in the number of virtual viewings that we are conducting. By planning ahead, we managed to get video walk-throughs recorded for many of the properties we are marketing before the lockdown but we are also now asking landlords and sellers to use video conferencing tools to conduct live virtual viewings in their own property, with us talking you through the property.

Safety and Security

In addition to the above, landlords are still responsible for ensuring that properties meet the required standards for when viewings can take place again.
